Suite for the Passersby is a suite of seven pieces for solo instruments (bass clarinet, cello, french horn, clarinet, piano, and two works for soprano) and interactive electronics and one piece for fixed electronics, designed for the Donald J. Hall Sculpture Park at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, MO. The movements combine to create an immersive and interactive sonic environment realized through this smartphone application. Using GPS data, the application responds to the listener’s location within the boundaries of the park, playing movements of the piece informed by where they are in relation to the sculptures. Each movement is in some way inspired by or responding to a sculpture, a collection of sculptures, or the architecture of the park.
Because the music follows your journey through the park, the experience is different every time! To enjoy the installation, all you need to do is download this app and grab a pair of headphones or ear buds. You must be physically inside the sculpture park to interact with the music. When prompted, allow for the app to access your phone’s GPS data. It’s easy as that! Plug in, tuck away your phone, and enjoy your exploration of sight and sound.
